Summer night, Ocean city oh that pier, she looks so pretty
all made up in flashing lights
Couples walk by hand in hand leaving footprints in the sand
artifacts from here and now
To my left some spoiled kid too angry for the life he lives
To my right some kind of clown
Talkin' sweet about his baby oh she lives in New York City
Going up to see her soon
And there's a lady in the corner singing songs for star-crossed-lovers
same as every other week
She's got a tip jar at her feet just does her best to make ends meet and all the tourists come to see
And I don't got nowhere to go so I'll just sit here drinking slow. Let her voice arrest my soul
Take me someplace far away oh I'll just lay out in the shade
Count mistakes I've never made
Now the clown he's gone away a clean cut stranger takes his place
Sunday best on Friday night
He's shootin glances at the door he's all dressed up to get stood up
It's clear to everyone but him
And I don't got nowhere to go so I'll just sit here drinking slow. Let her voice arrest my soul
Take me someplace far away oh I'll just lay out in the shade
count mistakes I've never made
And I don't got nowhere to go so I'll just sit here drinking slow. Let her voice arrest my soul
Take me someplace far away oh I'll just lay out in the shade
count mistakes, count mistakes I've never made
Autumn night, Ocean City oh that pier, she looks so pretty

Took a walk again last night,
pull yourself out of your mind
never does you any good, still somehow you think it should
She went upstairs and got to bed
briefly pretends you never left
you wound up knocking on my door again you're sleeping on the floor
And now you're talking in your sleep, about the way this used to be some sort of unpolluted dream you wouldn't ever dare to leave
But now these buildings look the same, maybe you need to make a change
Once everything was on your side, now you're running out of time.
Now you're laying on the ground
clumsy cage of broken bones
drawing pictures in the sky empty bottle at your side
She never really asked for much
you never really understood
that's just the way it goes I guess you only did the best you could
Now you're feeling left behind by things you never thought would change Remember when you wondered why so many people stayed the same?
You've got a way of looking down, says you're figuring this out, but now she's making up her mind, man you're running out of time
Man you're running out of time.
And all this time for nothing; that's all you're ever gonna say
always counts for something; that's all you're ever gonna hear
Man I don't have an answer, honestly I can't pretend I understand
But you finally have a reason...
You'll leave this place for real

Could you tell me again
what you hoped you'd found in me
throwing stones from the pier
cursing all the damn lights
Was it just something new
or did something else speak to you
carry you to my side
throwing stones to the tide
It didn't matter much to me what you thought I was headed towards
It didn't matter much to you where I thought you were
We were safe behind the masks of everybody we knew before
And we were burning through the blues we could never wash away
I don't remember what you said, made me life til my stomach turned
But I remember how you looked, oh it's all I really see these days
In that seafront town, oh the man by the shore used to run this place
now he sits all alone, watching ships fade to the sea.
An the nights we spent, tearing page after page from our memories
maybe you took the best of me
we had the world at our feet
So could you ask me again
will I really remember you
will I come back around for you
does the bracelet look good on you
See I get overwhelmed
I know I never gave an answer then
and I'm aware of the consequence of every word I never said
But I don't carry much regret, I'm just glad you said hi to me
Beneath that late summer sky and those damn neon lights
In that seafront town, oh the man by the shore used to run this place
now he sits all alone, watching ships fade to the sea.
And the nights we spent, tearing page after page from our memories
maybe you took the best of me
we had the world at our feet
We had the world at our feet
